Post #1 of 100 – 100 Portrait Challenge (in pen)
First Subject is: Dan Auerbach (Frontman of The Black Keys)
Overall I’m not surprised by the lack of awesomeness in these. But they’re my first set. This is going to get interesting. Next up is Lucille Ball

Challenge Details:
I’ve asked friends to give me a list of 100 recognizable individuals (famous/notable) that have enough reference out there to be drawn… i.e. google search returns more than 2 pages of photos.
My challenge consists of this. Each person gets drawn 5 times… in progressively longer cycles. So that’s 500 sketches.
Sketch 1: 2 minutes (Oh snap)
Sketch 2: 4 minutes (Manageable?)
Sketch 3: 6 minutes (Better still)
Sketch 4: 8 minutes (Ideal)
Sketch 5: 10 minutes (Like looking in a mirror)
Update: 1 – 30 minute sketch only per person. Read more
This is 30 minutes of pure sketching + setup time + and finding the right image to use. Looking at roughly 45 minutes per sketch here. 75 hours. I’m not sure when I’ll be done but I’m going to post each and every one of them as they are finished. This will establish a timeline of progress(I hope).
Obviously this is going to be difficult at first but the hope is that by doing this challenge I’ll progressively get better at recognition of lines and shapes as well as conservation of lines (efficiency/cleaner portraits). I had friends choose these people because it introduces me to new faces I might not be familiar with and have preconceived ideas. Some are common faces others are more uncommon. Oh… P.S. I’m doing this in pen…
Here is the list:

I wasn’t happy with the eyes however, it was a first attempt. I used a photo for reference.
#2 – Joakim Noah:

Shortened the back of his skull a bit and the mouth is a bit off but I like the direction these are going
